LEAP Labs
PI: Prof. Doug Petkie
Notable Projects
Fronts and Submesoscale Eddies, Fox-Kemper Lab
Conducted high-resolution numerical simulations using the MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm) to study temperature front evolution and submesoscale eddy dynamics. Analyzed frontogenesis mechanisms, energy transfer, and mixing efficiency across different parameterizations. Developed data analysis scripts in Python and MATLAB to track eddy structures and assess their impact on ocean circulation and biogeochemical processes. Findings contribute to improved modeling approaches for submesoscale turbulence.
Lensing Halo Correction, Weak Lensing Group
Developed methods to analyze astro-photography for signs of gravitational lensing. Created a Python algorithm to measure the radius of aberrations around stars in distant galaxy clusters. Successfully measured aberrations; ongoing research aims to refine image-analysis accuracy.
Accessible Microfluidics Platform, FMNST Labs
Conducted high-precision microfluidic experiments using low-cost, open-source materials. Built a Python/Matlab pipeline to correct image defects in low-quality camera microscopy. Confirmed fluid dynamic model; presented findings at the 2022 APS Division of Fluid Dynamics conference; developed procedure forms the basis of a manuscript in preparation.
Camden Somali Community Profile, IQP
Evaluated the socioeconomic status of the Somali Refugee community in Camden, London. Partnered with a local charity and interdisciplinary team; conducted statistical analysis, designed surveys, and conducted qualitative interviews.Compiled data into a white-paper, offering recommendations for community integration.
Leadership Positions
Thomistic Institute at Brown, President
Revived interest in Thomistic Institute Lectures post-pandemic. Selected relevant speakers; organized social gatherings; managed logistics. Doubled membership after a year of monthly lectures; continue as president.
Student Comedy Productions, President
Fostered collaboration between WPI’s three comedy groups. Led meetings, redesigned annual showcase, organized intergroup events. Established a lasting collaborative tradition, improving group relations.
Masque Theatre, Production Manager
Managed volunteer-staffed production within a strict budget and timeframe. Appointed team members, set deadlines, negotiated COVID-19 safety protocols. Delivered high-quality performance under budget within the original timeline.
